Haar was born and raised in the large country of Begnion, on the continent Tellius. He was trained to become one of Begnion's Imperial Dracoknights, but his commander, Shiharam Fizzart, took his men and defected from the country to join the country of Daein instead, unwilling to further the Begnion senate's corruption any longer. Haar had only been recently knighted at the time, but trusted fully in his commander's motives, and supported them to the very end, even after realizing far too late that they'd made a terrible miscalculation.
Eighteen years later, they knew the truth of it - Daein's Mad King Ashnard (having only been crowned the same year Shiharam and his men arrived in Daein) thirsted only for war and destruction, and even after eighteen long years of living in Daein and making every effort to learn the customs of the land, the group were still treated like foreigners by Daein's other Generals. Ordered to open floodgates that would slow the invading Crimean army, but destroy surrounding Daein farmland (in the Talrega region, where the men had ended up settling), Shiharam very reluctantly obeyed - the citizens in said area had only just begun to trust them. Due to Daein's way, he was to obey or be branded a traitor - meaning they would kill him and his family - and he had no choice.
However, before going into battle with the Crimean army, Shiharam - knowing this was probably going to be his last battle - charged Haar with the duty of seeing that their families were seen safely back to Begnion. They could no longer stand furthering Daein's corruption either. Thus, Haar was left out of the fateful fight where his commander was slain, but later returned to Daein. Despite his rather lax personality, Haar is a vindictive man, and sought revenge for his commander's death, not from Crimea however, who had actually slain him, but from Daein, who he felt were at fault, and who had so made their lives miserable.
This was a hard thing to achieve, as they had distrusted him even before Shiharam's death, and it wasn't until Jill Fizzart - Shiharam's daughter - succeeded in convincing Haar to join with the army she was in (the Crimean army - her joining is a whole 'nother story xD) that he was able to exact his revenge. He accompanied them until the very end, where they fought and won against Ashnard, but afterwards, they went their separate ways. He was 'sick to death of serving countries' as he told Jill, and instead desired to start a wyvern courier service for a living.
Haar and D'haka were first introduced when Haar was a mere teenager. Before the injury to his eye, before their defection to Daein, and before Haar was even a knight - his father had instilled (or beaten, as the case may be) in him the need to be a dracoknight, and the military always sought to introduce dragon and rider at the youngest age possible to promote bonding between the two. As dragons are a proud creature, it definitely took awhile before it would even let Haar near him, never mind ride him. However, the most peculiar thing happened to change the dragon's view of him - only a year after meeting each other, Haar sustained the fateful blow to his eye, almost rendering him incapable of being a soldier at all.
Once he'd been convinced to continue with his training, he returned to his dragon, expecting him to act as usual - it hadn't let him ride him yet without tossing the young man off, and he was wary to try again, especially with his new injury. But once approached, instead of acting rather unruly and standoffish like usual, D'haka willingly lowered himself to the ground enough that Haar would be able to climb into the harness. Surprised, the young man was wary of the sudden change in his steed, but discovered that from that day on, it seemed the dragon had taken it upon himself to watch over the young soldier. It seemed the dragon had respect for Haar, for, after losing so much, not backing down and instead continuing to chase his dream.
They seemed to develop an understanding after that day, where the dragon did his best to look out for Haar, protecting him from enemies more actively than any other steed, knowing his rider only had half of his vision. He also looked after the other during his many naps, letting him sleep upon him but still delivering him to where he needed to go regardless of his rider's lack of direction sometimes. D'haka seemed to take on this 'mother hen' role off of the battlefield as well, growling and snapping menacingly at anyone who gets too close to his rider, unless of course Haar permits the added presence. He's also been known to chastise his rider if he thinks he's doing something stupid, even going as far as to pick him up by the scruff of his shirt and cart him away from danger. |
